Use writing and reading for inquiry, learning, thinking, and communicating
I feel like the hyperessays really helped us to achieve this goal. The hyperessays, rather than just being based on research or analysis, required us to think critically about our topics, develop our own thoughts and critiques, and formulate our personal "take" on the topic. We also had to think about how we could most effectively communicate our ideas and points to the audience in a creative manner, such as using different formatting or related multimedia.
Understand the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes
There were also a lot of opportunities for collaboration with other students. Working in small groups was a valuable opportunity for us to practice giving and receiving feedback from our peers. Peer review is a unique process that allows for us to explore how our writing impacts an audience that's not just our professor. Furthermore, talking with students who have different backgrounds and skillsets allows you to receive feedback from multiple point of views, enriching the review process.
Use a variety of technologies to address a range of audiences & Respond to the needs of different audiences
One of the biggest reasons that I enjoyed this class was that we were challenged to communicate our ideas in various formats and medums. Exploring the genres of hypertext and documentary was a huge growing experience, since we had to step outside of our comfort zones and expertise in order to learn about and develop our skills in new areas. With each genre came a different audience to address, and we were challenged to figure out how to adapt our communication style to best fit the needs and expectations of the new audience. I learned how to use technologies such as Weebly and iMovie, which gave me the chance to exercise my creativity and put myself in the shoes of my audience.
Use conventions of format and structure appropriate to the rhetorical situation
Again, the hypertexts and documentary allowed me to experiment with different textual conventions and structures. For the hyperessay, I had challenge my notions of a conventional essay and think about how to get my point across in a concise, self-contained mini-essays that could all stand on their own, but also form a cohesive whole. For the documentary narration, I had to think about how to express my introduction and concluding statements in a manner that was enticing to the audience, through-provoking, and concise.
Integrate their own ideas with those of others
The blog posts and hyperessays have been especially helpful for achieving this goal. Both the blogs and the hyperessay require that we synthesize external research or publications with our own ideas, experiences, and critiques. Since most of the essays that I've written have been purely research or opinion-based, it was challenging to get used to this new style. However, after I got used to it, I found that this style of writing was very liberating and empowering, since our own insight and experience was just as valid as external sources. Being able to incorporate more personal details made the essays and blog posts both richer in content and also more exciting to compose.
