I've finally finished filming all three subjects for my ethnographic documentary on how identity influences an individual's making of music.
By far, the best part about this process has been hearing the subject's unique viewpoints and learning from their perspectives. I've really enjoyed the opportunity to just sit back and listen to someone else speak about their passion, without having to worry about formulating my own response or holding up my end of the conversation.
Although I haven't started editing yet and putting all the pieces together, I have noticed some common themes in all three interviews. For example, the question "Which aspect of your identity is most salient in your music making?" elicited very unique responses; none of the subjects chose a more conventional answer, such as race/gender/SES etc. Instead, they chose to talk about aspects of their identity that were more abstract. And in fact, their answers to this question were almost the same!
I'm very excited to start editing the footage and piecing everything together into a coherent whole that tells a story without me having to interject much. I only wish that we could make a longer movie, because I have so much interesting material.
